The State of Women in the Home Services Industry and Tips for Success
The State of Women in the Home Services Industry and Tips for Success To be successful in any industry hard work, positive relationships and a willingness to learn is a must. However, it often takes more than that to be successful in the specific industries and the home services industries, like HVAC, pest control, plumbing, cleaning services, and more, are a great example of this. Women, for instance, have consistently dominated health, education, recruitment, and customer service industries. This is due to the fact that these industries have allowed women to show that they can lead through clear communication, openness to innovate and can manage a team effectively. Now, women are looking to new industries and roles traditionally held by men. Which home services industries have the most female representation and what advice do these industry leaders have for new generations of workers? Industries with Strong Female Representation After six years in the business, Housecall Pro has compiled data from tens of thousands of past and current users to discover the true representation of female employees and business owners in the home services industries. 21% of Pest Control Employees are Women The pest control industry is expected to generate $17.4 billion dollars in 2023 and is very important for the health, safety, and comfort of people worldwide. While this is not considered a popular profession for women, the numbers are telling another story and are expected to increase as the industry booms in the coming years. 20% Of Employees in General Contracting are Women General contracting or construction is an industry women are not expected to play a large role in and is another major contributor to the U.S. economy. However, over the past few years, women have been making a stand for more representation. The hashtag, #MoveOverBob gained enough traction on social media to have its own website and is now a movement to increase educational opportunities for women within the construction industry. 20% of Plumbing Businesses are Run By Women The plumbing industry is worth $110 billion dollars and Housecall Pro has found that 20% of the plumbing business of its past and current users are owned by women. This could be a response to the rise of modern advancements, like social media, within the industry. Women are finding ways to thrive in an industry that is traditionally more difficult to break into unless you have a specific skill set or look. Why More Women in the Workforce is Important Why does female representation matter? Why is having more women in the workforce important? While there is a lot to unpack with that question. It all boils down to how when more women are in the workforce, the entire economy benefits. The empowerment of women to join the workforce has been found to boost productivity, increase economic diversity, and increase income equality which leads to faster economic growth for a company and a country. Increased opportunities for women as employees and leaders, also improve organizational effectiveness. This is why the representation of women in the home services industries, industries known to have mostly male representation is exciting. Emma Watsons New Book Club - We Are Joining...Are You - Classy Career Girl
Emma Watsons New Book Club - We Are Joining...Are You You may know Emma Watson from Harry Potter. But, most recently you may know her from this speech and being appointed as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and helping to launch the UN Women campaign HeForShe, which calls for men to advocate gender equality. Now shes at it again! Shes starting a feminist book club this year and all of us at CCG are joining in and fully supporting! Will you join with us CCG Readers? Emmas first book club selection is a memoir by Gloria Steinem called My Life on the Road. The best part is she is using a great reading app that we used many years ago called Good Reads. Good Reads lets users track and rate books and network with other readers. So, we are excited to be doing lots of networking with other women on fire for equality and success. Here is the link to Emmas book club, Our Shared Shelf, on Good Reads. Heres what Emma Watson says in the introduction to the book club: Dear Readers, As part of my work with UN Women, I have started reading as many books and essays about equality as I can get my hands on. There is so much amazing stuff out there! Funny, inspiring, sad, thought-provoking, empowering! Iâve been discovering so much that, at times, Iâve felt like my head was about to explode⦠I decided to start a Feminist book club, as I want to share what Iâm learning and hear your thoughts too. The plan is to select and read a book every month, then discuss the work during the monthâs last week (to give everyone time to read it!). I will post some questions/quotes to get things started, but I would love for this to grow into an open discussion with and between you all. Whenever possible I hope to have the author, or another prominent voice on the subject, join the conversation. If you fancy it, please join up and participate. Everyone is welcome. I would be honoured! Emma Watson About the Book: My Life on the Road is the moving, funny, and profound story of Gloriaâs growth and also the growth of a revolutionary movement for equalityâ"and the story of how surprising encounters on the road shaped both. In prose that is revealing and rich, Gloria reminds us that living in an open, observant, and âon the roadâ state of mind can make a difference in how we learn, what we do, and how we understand each other. Gloria Steinemâ"writer, activist, organizer, and inspiring leaderâ"now tells a story she has never told before, a candid account of her life as a traveler, a listener, and a catalyst for change. About the Author: Gloria Marie Steinem is an American feminist, journalist, and social and political activist who became nationally recognized as a leader and spokeswoman for the feminist movement in the late 1960s and early 70s. Research Your Target List - The Targeted Job Search - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Research Your Target List - The Targeted Job Search - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Research your target list. This is the third in the series on the Targeted Job Search. If you have not already read the previous posts, please do that now: Target the Company and Quit Chasing the Job Building your Target List The Targeted Job Search Step #2 in this process is to properly research the companies on your radar. Your goal is to find out if the company is somewhere you would want to work. Start with some basic research: Check out each companys website from your target list. Particularly, check out the press release section. Here, you will find press releases for financials, if it is a public company. If it is a start-up company, you will want to look for press releases for funding announcements. Check out all of the companies on your target list on Glassdoor. You will want to take the reviews on Glassdoor with a grain of salt. Read this latest article on Recruiter.com titled Should Employers Fear Glassdoor Reviews. Connect on LinkedIn with current employees You will want to locate employees by either certification or job title from your target list. The process I have had clients follow is the following: Go to LinkedIn Advanced Search Enter the certification letters (PMI or SPHR or CCNA, etc.) in the Last Name field or your job title in the Title field. Enter the company name in the Company field and select current from the drop down menu Enter your zip code into the Postal Code field Click on Search Using LinkedIn, locate people in the company who you are either already connected to or who you are a 2nd degree connection with. You will want to ask your connection how well they know the individual and whether they would be willing to make an introduction. You are looking for an introduction. You may have to approach multiple connections for multiple individuals. Be persistent. Once you have an introduction, schedule a phone call to plan to meet for coffee or lunch in order to ask them for AIR Advice, Insights and Recommendations! You are not looking for a job. You want to find out whether they like working there. What are the good and bad points about working there? Lastly, you want to ask them who should I talk to next or who can you introduce me to learn more? Connect with them on LinkedIn. Connect on LinkedIn with past employees Follow the same process but in the drop down menu for company select Past not Current! You will want to ask these past employees why they left the company. You may get a different view of the company! Connect with these individuals on LinkedIn. If you approach these individuals asking for advice rather than asking for a job, most of them will be receptive. When did you turn anyone down when someone asked you for advice? Next week I will be writing about connecting with recruiters. How To Optimize Your Engineer Resume
How To Optimize Your Engineer ResumeA quality engineer resume is really the most important component of a potential engineer applicant's resume. The content of a quality engineer resume largely determines the success of your resume as a potential candidate for engineering job offers. So if you want to improve your chances of getting hired by a firm, the content of your resume must be very professional and high quality. This job description indicates that an engineer resume is supposed to reflect the work history, experience, qualifications, education, training, and any strong personal background. Most engineering firms prefer an engineering resume which has a detailed and well-organized format. The content of a quality engineer resume must contain not only the basic information like educational background, work experience, previous works, and the title of the individual. The good news is that you can easily create your own resume if you do not possess enough knowledge on the technical aspects of resume writing. The bad news is that a good number of people in this world lack the expertise of writing a resume. So you need to prepare a resume with the help of a quality resume writer. There are several benefits that an engineer applicant will gain from hiring a quality resume writer for his/her resume. Some of these benefits include:Experience Matters: If the applicant had a wide range of experiences under his belt and has sufficient engineering or scientific knowledge and work experience then he/she will definitely get the interview call. On the other hand, the applicant who is just starting out in engineering may just not stand a chance against the engineering firm that has already been done in. An experienced resume writer will be able to find out the real work history of the individual from which the resume will be written. The Experience Matters: It is also a fact that the resume has to reflect the educational background and previous work experience of the applica nt. However, some applicants feel that they have to put more focus on their educational qualification than their previous work experience. Thus, they tend to overlook the overall presentation of their resumes.A quality engineer resume should be built around the main criteria for the job. For example, an applicant with theoretical knowledge in the fields of machine operation and electronics would probably not be hired by a firm that requires the applicant to be a mechanical or electrical engineer. Hence, it is very important to organize the technical details of the resume of the applicant so that it fulfills the required requirements of the company. It is advisable that the applicant keeps a look out for a quality resume writer as soon as possible in order to optimize the efficiency of his/her engineer resumes. The majority of the resumes are written with poor quality and many people start to make excuses when they don't get the call for interview. In this case, the engineer applicant has to avoid such common mistakes like having the wrong experience, having incorrect education and work history, taking shortcuts and embellishing the resume.

8 inner thoughts everyone has on their morning commute - Debut
8 inner thoughts everyone has on their morning commute - Debut Were all only human. We all have that little voice inside us that longs for disorder and chaos. And if you work in the big city, every morning that voice is satisfied. Yes, the morning commute brings out the very worst of our inner selves but such is the reality of any fight for survival. The range of emotions that someone can feel during this hour is startling. Here are just a few: Ugh. FINALLY. You managed to get out of bed while it was still dark outside. Youve fixed yourself after you put your shirt on inside out and then (somehow, bizarrely) back to front. You skipped breakfast just to make it to *insert suburban train station here* on time And the trains delayed. OH. There it is. I guess time flies when youre f%*ing furious. ?? I. CANT. BREATHE. In a lot of ways, life in London is very similar to death by drowning. Namely because of the vast sea of humanity youre wading into every morning. If a major train station is your only way to work, more life to you fam. If you have any other option (I hear cyclings alright) you might want to take it and avoid the overcrowding fiasco. Youll thank me when you dont have a strangers elbow or shoulder in your open mouth for 45 minutes. If you do find yourself in a situation like this, its important to zone out and go to your happy place. You might have a long way to go, and this is the only way to keep your sanity. Headphones are an essential tool for this. Draw for your favourite podcast or album and dream the whole experience away. I usually go for Death Cab For Cutie as Ben Gibbards sweet-sounding emo misery makes for a great distraction from my own predicament. Wow. You need to chill. While youre in your dream-like chill state, be sure to pay attention to your surroundings or you might make some enemies. Drift listlessly into someones way and all of a sudden youre a pig who needs to watch where the hell hes going. Jeez! Some people, eh? *chuckles weakly* Excuse me! Its all fun and games until the same thing happens to you. Your feelings of zen and nirvana become distant as you travel deeper into the bowels of the London Underground, where no-one can hear you scream. And to make matters worse, someones standing on the wrong side of the escalator. MOVE OMG *ahem* Sorry! ??, you splutter as you shuffle from side to side trying to let everyone around you know that you have the same tube to catch as they do. But they cant hear you. Theyve got The Sound of Settling or My Dad Wrote a Porno on full blast. Theyre blissfully unaware of the expletives youre screaming at them in your head. You are, at this point, fully picturing bodyslamming them off the escalator. Youve become everything you said you wouldnt. Oh God. Im sorry. Im so sorry. Its time to feel guilty again. Be honest. Youve committed a multitude of sins on you way to work today. Add all that to the time you laughed at the tall guy getting bonked on the head by a closing tube door. Or the time you were forced to stand way too close to another guys girlfriend on a packed train (she was nice about it). Its okay. You werent to know commuting to London was like this. Its important that you forgive yourself. Ah. The nightmare is over. You made it. ?? The hell of the morning commute is done for another day. Now all that left is huh? 8 hours of work?! Hey, if you love what you do, it aint so bad. ?? Images by Giphy Feature image via The Independent Connect with Debut on Facebook and Twitter

Avoid 3 Traps of the On-line Job Application
Avoid 3 Traps of the On-line Job Application You will be asked to complete an on-line job application as part of the hiring process. Why, because it makes life easier for recruiters. And because they wont need to pay someone to do data entry, youve done it for them. The application is a weeding out tool. Perhaps employers wont admit it, but, they are looking for certain things that would result in your elimination from the pack. Before I list those three traps, remember that the application must contain the right buzz words or keywords. There is no dictionary or thesaurus for these words. The words the employer searches for are generally the words used in the job posting. Simple. Just as you are entering in keywords or job titles into www.indeed.com, so are recruiters entering in keywords to find the best applicants. This is what you need to know about applicant tracking systems. This also means you will want to type in as much quality stuff as possible. Dont take short cuts. OK, so you are entering the easy stuff: name, address, telephone, email address and then you come to: ONE: What are your salary requirements? You try in vain to skip to the next question, but it wont let you. Darn, youll have to put a number in. Shoot, what number do you put? What you really want, how much you were paid in you last job, a low-ball number? Maybe. There isnt an easy answer for this. The answer depends on many things. Industry, occupation, competition in both, company and the alignment of the moon and stars. The answer will require that you step back and do some research. Talk to people in your occupation, ideally in that company, use salary calculators and talk to recruiters in that field. Ask for advice from people. With this information in hand, pick a mid-point. The mid point would be a salary you would accept for this job plus some. Sure, nice and easy. It isnt. The idea is to put a number in there that you would be ok with and that the employer finds within their range. All this is predicated on the skills and requirements of the job. It isnt about you. How many years of experience is the job posting requiring? Thats the biggest clue as to the level of salary the employer expects to pay. With this question answered, you move onto the Work History section. Read the instructions carefully. Employers and jobs are not the same. If the instructions state: List Employers that is what you need to do. So list the employers you have had within the last 10-15 years. Remember, the instructions didnt specify how far back to go. This is your choice. If the instructions state: List every position, then list each job you had with each employer. Be sure to break down employment by different jobs within a large company to show adaptability and ability to change. But then the application asks for TWO: Salary information for previous jobs Why, because they can. Truly, it is none of their business how much you were paid before. That is between you and the IRS. But being a good instruction follower youll provide a number for them if it doesnt hurt your chances. If the number is too high, you could be out. How can you downplay this number? You could put your starting salary in that position/job assuming that you received raises and made more at the end. Whatever you do, do NOT lie. That will not work. Phew, now it is on to the question THREE: Reason for leaving Sometimes youll have pull down options. Sometimes youll type it in. Keep it positive and short. Always use the most positive response, not the absolute truth. If you were fired, but it was due to a difference of opinion when new management took over, would you choose: a) Fired b) Personal c) Position eliminated d) Change in management The answer could be c) Position eliminated or d) Change in management. Applications will ask if you know someone in the company. Make sure this person knows you are applying before you include their name. Also make sure they are in good standing with the company. Name dropping can be a real plus. As always, if you can find someone inside the company to send your resume to or who is willing to be a champion for you, use them too! Filling out application after application will tend to result in a lack-luster response. Take the extra step and get the resume to the right person. Better yet, you should have identified this employer as a target and been in contact BEFORE the job was posted.

How to make the most of job search connections -
How to make the most of job search connections - During the dog days of summer, some of you job-seekers may think about taking a break from your search. Instead, you might want to ramp up your efforts and consider the new season an opportunity to relaunch any unfinished career plans. One inevitable aspect of the search? Interacting and engaging with connectionsâ"extending your network to tap into the hidden job market. Sudy Bharadwaj is the co-founder and chief executive officer of JackalopeJobs.com, which allows you to log in with your favorite social network and learn which of your connections work in companies that interest you. He has seen many job-seekers benefit from carefully accessing their extended network. Here are Bharadwajs nine suggestions for successfully networking your way to a job: 1. Connect with your network before you apply for positions. Even if you identify jobs via boards or postings, touch base with connections before applying directly. Many organizations prioritize applicants referred by employees. Some companies even give bonuses to employees who suggest candidates who are hired, so some networking contacts may have a financial incentive to pass along your information. Dont be shy about reaching out and asking for a hand. 2. Rotate your thinking. Bharadwaj suggests: Instead of finding jobs and focusing on connections in those companies, consider targeting your connections first and investigating who among them may be able to provide a link to a potential opportunity. To be successful, its important to know what you want and to be able to articulate how you can help an organization solve its problems. Once you know what you offer and how it relates to companies where you want to work, it will be much easier to leverage your network of contacts who can help you land jobs successfully. 3. Encourage your network by making it easy for them to help you. 4. Be concise and offer easy access to your information. 5. Go wide. 6. Dont go too deep. 7. Limit time requests. 8. Be patient. 9. Keep track and follow up. Read the whole post on my U.S. News World Report column. Photo by honor the gift
