5 Ways to Master Your Body Language for Job Interviews CareerMetis.com
5 Ways to Master Your Body Language for Job Interviews There's bounty riding on a prospective employee meeting, and keeping in mind that the discussion matters, your non-verbal communication can say a lot about what you're truly thinking. You know the drill for a prospective employee meet-up: Arrive on schedule, dress to dazzle and have a few reactions prepared for questions the recruiting director is probably going to inquire. evalBut it's additionally worth giving close consideration to another part of the meeting â" your non-verbal communication. The physical messages we send can be similarly as amazing as what we state. Monitoring your own non-verbal communication, and that of the individual on the opposite side of the work area, can assist you with nailing the interview.Let's gander at five fundamental body parts â" from head to toe â" to realize how to peruse non-verbal communication in a meeting, and leave a solid impression that you're the ideal individual for the role.1) Your face â" an abundance of expressionevalMeeting an o utsider is rarely simple. With regards to a prospective employee meet-up it very well may be significantly harder as the cards are stacked in the recruiting administrator's kindness. Be that as it may, a comforting grin on meeting the questioner can be an amazing ice breaker. Not all grins are made equivalent. The litmus trial of a veritable grin is that you let the sides of your eyes crease, as opposed to simply turning up the edges of your mouth.A genuine grin is something beyond infectious. It can exhibit that you have a perky character and a can-do mentality, the two of which are exceptionally looked for after.2) Embrace the intensity of eye contactEye contact assumes a basic job in a prospective employee meeting. By keeping in touch you radiate clear signals that you're really keen on the job, and in what the questioner needs to state. In the event that maintaining eye contact with the employing manager turns out to be excessively, it's totally normal to look quickly at your not es. Simply make certain to take a gander at the questioner when they are doing the talking. The estimation of eye to eye connection doesn't diminish in various conditions, it simply should be adjusted. At some phase of the recruiting procedure for example, you may wind up confronting a meeting board. That is the point at which you have to give every individual from the board equivalent eye to eye connection when you talk. It tends to be requesting however it merits the exertion. No one can really tell which specialist will have the last say about whether you're directly for the job. evalSimilarly, you might be engaged with a gathering meeting, offering the recruiting administrator's regard for a few different candidates. At the point when different applicants are talking, it's critical to give them complete consideration by looking. Without a doubt, they might be your opposition, however accepting the open door to flick some residue from your sleeve or gaze around the room while they 're talking can fix all your great work. It recommends an absence of enthusiasm for the assessments of others, and that is unquestionably not an attribute the recruiting director will be looking for.On the flipside, on the off chance that you discover the employing supervisor's look is meandering, it could be an indication that they're losing interest. Attempt to change the beat of your voice, or offer shorter, more keen reactions. It might be that your answers are turning into a piece longwinded.3) Your stance â" inconspicuous signs state a lotAn simple approach to exhibit an expert, sure viewpoint is by sitting upright. Not ramrod straight â" attempt to lean in somewhat towards the questioner and tilt your head a little to show you're locked in by what's being said.Avoid relaxing back with one arm tossed calmly over the arm of the seat. It can give the impression of self-importance or an excessively easygoing demeanor. Alternately, slouching up, or bringing down your jaw into yo ur chest can cause you to show up defensive.evalKeep an eye on the recruiting supervisor's stance as well. Planning to repeat their stance can make the impression of being related spirits who think along a similar expert lines. It's a procedure known as reflecting, however it should be utilized with nuance. Try not to emulate the questioner, which can be inside and out irritating. Or maybe, submit general direction to their stance to shape your own.4) Speaking with your handsAccompany that comforting grin toward the beginning of the prospective employee meet-up with a confident handshake. It shouldn't be a knuckle-breaking grasp, which can propose predominance. Nor should it be a limp handle, which talks about instability. Take a stab at rehearsing your handshake with a companion until you believe you have it right. Snappy tip: You realize you'll be relied upon to shake hands, so move any papers or notes to one side hand before you welcome the recruiting manager. What you do with you r arms and hands for the rest of the meeting is similarly as significant. During the gathering, abstain from sitting with your arms crossed. It makes a feeling that you're shut off to the questioner and uninterested in what they need to say. Many of us signal with our hands, and that is not a terrible thing as it can show your enthusiasm about a subject. The stunt isn't to go over the edge with wild arm swings or excessively fast hand developments that can immediately get irritating, and reduce what you're stating. A decent dependable guideline is to keep your hands over the work area and beneath your shoulders. In the weight cooker condition of a prospective employee meet-up, it's anything but difficult to make hand motions that you're not even mindful of, and it can neutralize you. Scouring your jawline, contacting your lips, or playing with hair or adornments are for the most part developments that nerves can welcome on. For the employing director however, it can propose you're awk ward instead of in order of the circumstance. On the off chance that you don't confide in yourself, just crease your hands on the work area. Odds are you'll warm to the circumstance after the initial couple of moments and begin to loosen up a little.eval5) Legs can say plentyJob interviews aren't constantly led over a work area. You might be welcome to sit on a low seat or lounge chair around a foot stool. At the point when that occurs, your legs and even feet can say a lot about how you feel.As enticing as it might be to fold your legs, fight the temptation. Much like arm-crossing, this can propose that you're closing out the questioner. A more secure alternative is to sit with the two legs together, with your feet pointed toward the employing supervisor. This shows you're occupied with what they're stating, and that you need to shape an association. Similarly as dull hand motions ought to be evaded, foot tapping can be indication of nerves, or more terrible, disturbance and eagern ess. Keep the two feet level on the ground, and it's difficult to go wrong.Practice makes perfectAs with everything throughout everyday life, idealizing your non-verbal communication in a prospective employee meet-up can call for training. Attempt pretending a couple of meetings with a companion or relative who will give legitimate, helpful criticism. evalWe talk with unquestionably more than words alone, and acing your non-verbal communication is all piece of the specialty of persuading the recruiting chief that you're really amazing contender for the activity.

Managers Have time for your people - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
Directors Have time for your kin - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Do you possess energy for your representatives? Or then again do you have increasingly significant activities? John from Seattle composed a disappointed remark at my blog some time prior. One of his associates at an immense IT anticipate is essentially not cutting it: He is in every case late, he never complies with his time constraints and he doesn?t regard understandings. John has raised these issues with his associate a few times with no achievement, and now he feels that it?s time for his administrator to step in. What's more, John?s chief might especially want to talk about this with him whenever he has a touch of room left in his calendar ? which is in three weeks! That?s not sufficient on the grounds that meanwhile John develops increasingly more disappointed doing his own activity just as that of his awkward associate. John is this near simply stopping ? what's more, the organization is near losing an important worker since his chief hasn?t got time to converse with him. A couple of years back The Danish Association of Managers and Executives distributed an investigation indicating that 60% of Danish chiefs possess too little energy for their work since they invest a lot of time in their representatives. What a heap of babble! As a director, your workers are your activity. Your absolute primary goal is to keep them glad and profitable. Obviously all supervisors have different activities too, however in the event that you put your own assignments over those of your quick subordinates, the outcome will be an expansion in one person?s proficiency (yours) to the detriment of that of 10-20 others (contingent upon what number of you are answerable for). On the off chance that you?re not 10-20 times more profitable than them, that?s a downright awful thought. So you have to possess energy for your kin each and every day. Time for two things: making and looking after great, neighborly relations and taking care of any emergencies that may emerge. A portion of the world?s top officials have just gotten on: Marissa Mayer, in her time at Google opened her office entryway each evening somewhere in the range of 4 and 5.30. There was an information exchange sheet on the divider and love seats and WiFi in the lobby outside so individuals could work while they paused. During this 90 minutes, all Google workers could introduce their inquiries, questions, wishes or thoughts. A couple of years back, IKEA held an European official gathering in their store in Gentofte, Denmark, and author Ingvar Kamprad was available as well. At the point when the gathering closes, Ingvar goes for a walk through the store, merciful and smilingly welcoming every single representative. He experiences two female workers conversing with one another and approaches them with a grin and the words: ?And what are too such dazzling women discussing at that point?? ? catching up with goliath embrace for them both. Not terrible for a man who?s a multi-extremely rich person accountable for well more than 100,000 individuals overall ? what's more, 86 years of age. Numerous chiefs accept that it?s enough to simply announce that ?My entryway is open?. Indeed, it?s a decent beginning, however your calendar is likewise open ? or then again do you have one end to the other gatherings for a long time to come? So what precisely would you be able to do set aside a few minutes for your workers? I?ve got two straightforward and viable tips for you: Tip No. 1: Say hello! A caring welcome from the supervisor has a totally astounding impact. In any case, it?s insufficient to simply get your head through the entryway and holler great morning to the room by and large. Walk the passageways and give every single worker an individual welcome. Shake hands, look at individuals without flinching, and associate with individuals ? ?Did you have a pleasant end of the week??; ?Did you watch the game yesterday??; ?Is your child improving??. Tip No. 2: Reserve five minutes for a representative consistently ? with no specific plan. Simply converse with another one consistently, just to discover how things are going. You can make a rundown to assist you with keeping on whom you have conversed with and when and guarantee that you get around to everyone in the long run. This will reinforce your relationship with every one of your representatives, however you will likewise hear a ton that you probably won't have been told something else. Do these means sound insignificant? Indeed, you?re right, they are ? in any case, that?s why they work! They?re so straightforward, they don't cost anything, they take (basically) no time by any stretch of the imagination, and each supervisor can do them. Also, on the off chance that you don?t figure you can discover time for them, my answer is basic as well: You can?t manage the cost of not to! What number of good workers do you chance losing in the event that you haven?t got time for them? Furthermore, what amount will it cost you to supplant them? Much obliged for visiting my blog. In case you're new here, you should look at this rundown of my 10 most well known articles. Uber Interview Questions - Maximum Sum of Non-adjacent Elements
Uber Interview Questions - Maximum Sum of Non-adjacent Elements As you may know, one of our blogs current focuses is on Uber interview questions. Their questions are usually representative and you can expect exactly the same kind of questions from other top companies like Google, Facebook, Airbnb, etc.. In addition, we only cover questions that were asked recently. This week, the question is maximum sum of non-adjacent elements. Its of medium difficulty, you may expect to have it as the second question in an on-site interview. We are going to cover topics including array, recursion/dynamic programming, algorithm efficiency and so on so forth. Maximum Sum of Non-adjacent Elements Given an array of integers, find a maximum sum of non-adjacent elements. For example, inputs [1, 0, 3, 9, 2] should return 10 (1 + 9). The question has been asked by Uber recently (as the time of writing). Ive also seen many similar questions like finding the maximum sum of subarrays. Analysis Again, if you havent seen this questions before, solve it by yourself first. Otherwise, theres no point to reading this post. Its not obvious to solve this problem naively. Unlike many other interview questions, you can hardly use brute force or some greedy algorithms here, because theres no way for you to list all non-adjacent elements combination. But just because of this, it provides a great hint dynamic programming. Let me explain more here. Dynamic programming You may check Step by Step Guide to Dynamic Programming if you are unfamiliar with this concept and its completely necessary to know it for coding interviews. When I was trying to solve this problem, there are two obvious things that make me think about dynamic programming. First, when the question is about finding particular subarrays or subsets, dynamic programming is usually a great approach. This is because the problem is easy to break down into sub-problems. Second, when you find it impossible to brute force all possibilities, it also indicates that recursion or dynamic programming is worth to try. For example, finding subarray with given sum can easily be solved by brute force (of course its not optimal), but you can do the same thing to find the subset with given sum. (Check this post for more info) Solution With that in mind, we should think about how to break down the big problem into sub-problems. Suppose we know the max sum for all subarrays, how can it help us to solve the overall problem? Lets use max_sum[i] denote the maximum sum for subarray arr[0i]. If the last number arr[i] is included in the sum, max_sum[i] should equal to arr[i] + max_sum[i-2] (because arr[i-1] cannot be included). Similarly, if arr[i] isnt included, then max_sum[i] should equal to arr[i-1]. Therefore, we have the following formula: max_sum[i] = MAX(arr[i] + max_sum[i-2], max_sum[i-1]) So the code is like: Memorization One of the advantages of dynamic programming is memorization. In the above code, many steps are unnecessarily re-calculated. To make it faster, we should store all results in memory. Thus, we have the following code: As you can see, we use array mem to store all results weve processed so that we wont repeat the unnecessary calculation. The time complexity is O(N) because from i = 0 to N, every single one is calculated at most once due to memorization. As we use an extra array, the space complexity is O(N) as well. Optimization Can you further optimize the solution? First of all, theres no way to improve the time complexity because we should check every single number at least once. Thus O(N) is the lower bound. Thus, we should think about reducing memory usage. If you take a look at the previous formula again, you might notice one interesting fact. Every step only relies on the previous two steps results. In other words, if we care about max_sum(i), theres no need to store anything before i-2. The code might be quite different from previous versions, that is because we are doing a bottom-up approach for dynamic programming. We use prevOne and prevTwo to store results of previous two steps. From i = 0 to N, we store the results of each subarray arr[0i] to prevOne and arr[0i-1] to prevTwo, thus the next iteration can use them to calculate for the new subarray. In essence, they are exactly the same as previous solutions. Summary I hope you found the question maximum sum of non-adjacent elements helpful. Instead of giving you the final solution, I think its very necessary to provide the whole analysis process and provide the coding solution at each step. Otherwise, many people wont be able to know where the final solution come from. Dynamic programming is a hard topic in coding interviews. Most of the time a top-down approach is enough, but for this one, a bottom-up approach is more efficient. By the way, if you want to have more guidance from experienced interviewers, you can check Gainlo that allows you to have mock interview with engineers from Google, Facebook ,etc..

Crack open that old notebook.Read your list.So did you eat healthier? Are your finances in a better place?Did you get that makeover? How did that career transition go or not go?Are you in a new home?Did your business grow?Did you launch your website? Are you happier today than when 2014 began?Think through your 2014 New Years resolutionsCross out the ones you got done and celebrate thoseHighlight the ones that you didnt get done in 2014The assignment is not to dwell on missed opportunities but to figure out why you left so much on the table. Its inevitable.Chances are (unless you had few or zero 2014 resolutions) that a few big ones did not happenChances are that year after year the same one is haunting youWhen looking at those unresolved dreams ask yourselfDid I ever really want that or was I trying to fulfill someone elses expectations? Was I really ready to sacrifice my sleep or family or [x] time for that goal?Did I continue to surround myself with unsupportive folks? How well equipped was I by myself to reach that goal? Was I setting myself up for disappointments by aiming for unrealistic goals? Was I seriously sober when I wrote that? (Just kidding, maybe?)Heres an example of one of my own 2014 unfulfilled goals:My goal was to have in place a do-it-yourself product so that when I birthed my twins I could continue to sustain my business while going from being a mom of one little boy to three boys.So how did I net out?I created this sales page.I sent a note to my database 1.5 months prior to going on maternity leave.I sold some packages. And then proceeded the sound of crickets.I went on maternity leave for about four months. And instead of selling this DIY packetformer and new clients wanted more of me and my time rather than less of me and my timeIn other words, you guys didnt really want to do-it-yourselvesYou prefer a partnerAn accompliceA sound boardingA strategic career expert to give you confidence in knowing that you are doing everything right or who will help you think through what youre doing wrong based on years of experienceSo after reviewing this 2014 goalGetting to know hundreds of youAnd evaluating my anticipated 2015 best lifeMy plan is to offer higher-touch, even more tailored, deeper diving career coaching options to fewer clients in 2015Why?You want more of me and I want more of you.Let me explain. You want me to be accessible the night before your interviewYou want me to iron out your interview answersYou want me to uncover usable insights around your interviewersIn turn,I want to teach you the most effective ways to outsmart your competition based on your specific situationI want to show you how to work a room filled with prospective colleagues, leaders or direct reports while taking into account what it will take to get YOU comfortable in a stressful settingI want to meet you one-on-oneNow, there is no sales page (yet). My rationale behind my example is not to sell you on my brainchild instead I want to show you how you can think about your 2014 unrealized resolutions to inform your 2015 goals so that they will have a higher likelihood of success. Now, its time to reevaluate your 2014 resolutionsBe honest with yourselfUncover why so me never happenedAnd use those insights so that 2015 is more productive and fulfilling.Happy Sunday,Melissa

Parenting Cliches About Your Career That Are Actually True - The Muse
Child rearing Cliches About Your Career That Are Actually True - The Muse Child rearing Cliches About Your Career That Are Actually True Okay, so perhaps eating a lot of carrots didn't shield you from requiring glasses, and no, you never really went daze from sitting excessively near the TV. In any case, that doesn't imply that the entirety of the guidance your folks gave you is totally fake. Truth be told, your people presumably doled out a lot of adages and sayings that are in reality quite relevant to your vocation and expert life now. Obviously, you presumably feigned exacerbation and moaned drastically at that point and were everything, You don't get it, you despite everything call Twitter, 'Tweeter.' In any case, it's never past the point where it is possible to give that exhortation something to do. Here are five feelings from dear old Mom and Dad that are more material than you at any point accepted they would be. Also, don't stress you don't have to disclose to them that they were correct. 1. You Catch More Flies With Honey Lecturing graciousness must be on the principal page of the parent handbook, as they're in every case fast to advise you that keenness is the best approach. Clearly, there are events when you should be more harsh and direct in the work environment like when your understudy comes in late for the umpteenth time. Be that as it may, by and large, you can't turn out badly with being neighborly. It's human instinct, truly. At the point when individuals are thoughtful to us, we feel slanted to be benevolent to them. Besides, being all the more well disposed and playful in your office not just intrigues your group and does ponders with regards to encouraging better work connections, but at the same time it's probably going to improve your disposition toward your day by day work. Along these lines, get bagels and doughnuts once in a while, praise your colleague on an occupation very much done, or play out a totally irregular demonstration of thoughtfulness. You'll be amazed how much your whole workplace and mentality will change by simply being more pleasant. 2. Never Burn Your Bridges We as a whole know the extremely appealing Disney melody, It's a Small World After All. Annoying as it might be-and I do apologize that it's presently latched onto your subconscious mind the assumption unquestionably holds water. Let's be honest; the business world is in reality beautiful darn little particularly in case you're in a more specialty industry. Along these lines, you generally should be aware of keeping up positive associations with colleagues, bosses, and companions. Remembering this counsel is particularly basic while leaving a position (indeed, regardless of whether it's one you detested!). It's critical to turn in your notification such that is conscious and proficient, paying little heed to the amount you need to toss both center fingers in your manager's face. All things considered, you never entirely know who your manager is associated with, which previous colleagues you'll experience later on, or who'll get required a back-channel reference. 3. It's Not Always About What You Know, But Who Goodness, the unquestionable intensity of associations. Does this situation sound recognizable? You're being considered for a vocation you realize you'd be stunning at, and you're sure you totally nailed the meeting. A couple of days after the fact, you get the feared much appreciated, yet not this time email, telling you that the organization's pushed ahead with an alternate up-and-comer and afterward, exactly when you're proceeding onward from the dismissal, you find the supervisor's neighbor's cousin's little girl found your fantasy work. Odds are, that severe shock was before long followed by this little motivational speech from one of your folks. Tragically, it's actual. The most qualified individual isn't generally the person who lands the position. Things being what they are, how might you apply this to your expert life today? Keep assembling your system take a shot at it each and every week. Join industry affiliations and go to nearby systems administration occasions. Set up instructive meetings with organizations you love and individuals you appreciate. Putting yourself out there can be startling (and even feel superfluous when you like your present position), yet amassing a ground-breaking set of contacts will surrender you a leg on the opposition when you need it. 4. Rome Wasn't Built in a Day We as a whole realize that your first occupation likely won't be your fantasy work. (Or on the other hand even your initial not many.) No, it takes a considerable amount of snort work before you even draw near to where you need to be in your vocation. In any case, there's nothing amiss with stirring your way up the stepping stool. It very well may be baffling to feel like you're going no place in your position and you're not straightforwardly adding to the primary concern particularly when you know you're able to do significant work. Be that as it may, as your folks wanted to remind you, progress requires some serious energy. It is anything but a short-term change. Additionally, there's an upside: You're promptly amiable in case you're the person who brings the espresso. At any rate, you have that going for you. 5. Activities Speak Louder Than Words Not exclusively was this announcement likely imprinted on a banner hanging in your kindergarten homeroom, however you most likely heard it bounty from your folks, as well. All things considered, Mom and Dad were correct once more. Saying something and really doing it are two totally various things. Anyone can state on their resume or in the meeting that the person a talented group developer or a Photoshop master. In any case, the truth will eventually come out, and you're going to should have the option to take care of business. (Like that? I pressed two reward parentisms in here for you!) The equivalent applies to office connections and clashes. It's anything but difficult to apologize to your chief or a colleague for a slip-up you made. On the off chance that you keep on more than once commit that error over and over? Presently you have issues. Follow up all that you state at work with a genuine, live relating activity. Try not to have time? At that point don't tell somebody in any case it's as straightforward as that. Without a doubt, your folks likely didn't really walk three miles to class, tough the two different ways, shoeless in a blizzard. In any case, when you move past the overstated stories and eyeroll-commendable parentisms, you'll likely observe that they really hear what they're saying. All things considered, you should accept the counsel from somebody who's experienced everything previously. Photograph of father and child civility of Shutterstock.

Emma Watsons New Book Club - We Are Joining...Are You - Classy Career Girl
Emma Watsons New Book Club - We Are Joining...Are You You may know Emma Watson from Harry Potter. But, most recently you may know her from this speech and being appointed as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and helping to launch the UN Women campaign HeForShe, which calls for men to advocate gender equality. Now shes at it again! Shes starting a feminist book club this year and all of us at CCG are joining in and fully supporting! Will you join with us CCG Readers? Emmas first book club selection is a memoir by Gloria Steinem called My Life on the Road. The best part is she is using a great reading app that we used many years ago called Good Reads. Good Reads lets users track and rate books and network with other readers. So, we are excited to be doing lots of networking with other women on fire for equality and success. Here is the link to Emmas book club, Our Shared Shelf, on Good Reads. Heres what Emma Watson says in the introduction to the book club: Dear Readers, As part of my work with UN Women, I have started reading as many books and essays about equality as I can get my hands on. There is so much amazing stuff out there! Funny, inspiring, sad, thought-provoking, empowering! Iâve been discovering so much that, at times, Iâve felt like my head was about to explode⦠I decided to start a Feminist book club, as I want to share what Iâm learning and hear your thoughts too. The plan is to select and read a book every month, then discuss the work during the monthâs last week (to give everyone time to read it!). I will post some questions/quotes to get things started, but I would love for this to grow into an open discussion with and between you all. Whenever possible I hope to have the author, or another prominent voice on the subject, join the conversation. If you fancy it, please join up and participate. Everyone is welcome. I would be honoured! Emma Watson About the Book: My Life on the Road is the moving, funny, and profound story of Gloriaâs growth and also the growth of a revolutionary movement for equalityâ"and the story of how surprising encounters on the road shaped both. In prose that is revealing and rich, Gloria reminds us that living in an open, observant, and âon the roadâ state of mind can make a difference in how we learn, what we do, and how we understand each other. Gloria Steinemâ"writer, activist, organizer, and inspiring leaderâ"now tells a story she has never told before, a candid account of her life as a traveler, a listener, and a catalyst for change. About the Author: Gloria Marie Steinem is an American feminist, journalist, and social and political activist who became nationally recognized as a leader and spokeswoman for the feminist movement in the late 1960s and early 70s. Research Your Target List - The Targeted Job Search - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Research Your Target List - The Targeted Job Search - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Research your target list. This is the third in the series on the Targeted Job Search. If you have not already read the previous posts, please do that now: Target the Company and Quit Chasing the Job Building your Target List The Targeted Job Search Step #2 in this process is to properly research the companies on your radar. Your goal is to find out if the company is somewhere you would want to work. Start with some basic research: Check out each companys website from your target list. Particularly, check out the press release section. Here, you will find press releases for financials, if it is a public company. If it is a start-up company, you will want to look for press releases for funding announcements. Check out all of the companies on your target list on Glassdoor. You will want to take the reviews on Glassdoor with a grain of salt. Read this latest article on Recruiter.com titled Should Employers Fear Glassdoor Reviews. Connect on LinkedIn with current employees You will want to locate employees by either certification or job title from your target list. The process I have had clients follow is the following: Go to LinkedIn Advanced Search Enter the certification letters (PMI or SPHR or CCNA, etc.) in the Last Name field or your job title in the Title field. Enter the company name in the Company field and select current from the drop down menu Enter your zip code into the Postal Code field Click on Search Using LinkedIn, locate people in the company who you are either already connected to or who you are a 2nd degree connection with. You will want to ask your connection how well they know the individual and whether they would be willing to make an introduction. You are looking for an introduction. You may have to approach multiple connections for multiple individuals. Be persistent. Once you have an introduction, schedule a phone call to plan to meet for coffee or lunch in order to ask them for AIR Advice, Insights and Recommendations! You are not looking for a job. You want to find out whether they like working there. What are the good and bad points about working there? Lastly, you want to ask them who should I talk to next or who can you introduce me to learn more? Connect with them on LinkedIn. Connect on LinkedIn with past employees Follow the same process but in the drop down menu for company select Past not Current! You will want to ask these past employees why they left the company. You may get a different view of the company! Connect with these individuals on LinkedIn. If you approach these individuals asking for advice rather than asking for a job, most of them will be receptive. When did you turn anyone down when someone asked you for advice? Next week I will be writing about connecting with recruiters. How To Optimize Your Engineer Resume
How To Optimize Your Engineer ResumeA quality engineer resume is really the most important component of a potential engineer applicant's resume. The content of a quality engineer resume largely determines the success of your resume as a potential candidate for engineering job offers. So if you want to improve your chances of getting hired by a firm, the content of your resume must be very professional and high quality. This job description indicates that an engineer resume is supposed to reflect the work history, experience, qualifications, education, training, and any strong personal background. Most engineering firms prefer an engineering resume which has a detailed and well-organized format. The content of a quality engineer resume must contain not only the basic information like educational background, work experience, previous works, and the title of the individual. The good news is that you can easily create your own resume if you do not possess enough knowledge on the technical aspects of resume writing. The bad news is that a good number of people in this world lack the expertise of writing a resume. So you need to prepare a resume with the help of a quality resume writer. There are several benefits that an engineer applicant will gain from hiring a quality resume writer for his/her resume. Some of these benefits include:Experience Matters: If the applicant had a wide range of experiences under his belt and has sufficient engineering or scientific knowledge and work experience then he/she will definitely get the interview call. On the other hand, the applicant who is just starting out in engineering may just not stand a chance against the engineering firm that has already been done in. An experienced resume writer will be able to find out the real work history of the individual from which the resume will be written. The Experience Matters: It is also a fact that the resume has to reflect the educational background and previous work experience of the applica nt. However, some applicants feel that they have to put more focus on their educational qualification than their previous work experience. Thus, they tend to overlook the overall presentation of their resumes.A quality engineer resume should be built around the main criteria for the job. For example, an applicant with theoretical knowledge in the fields of machine operation and electronics would probably not be hired by a firm that requires the applicant to be a mechanical or electrical engineer. Hence, it is very important to organize the technical details of the resume of the applicant so that it fulfills the required requirements of the company. It is advisable that the applicant keeps a look out for a quality resume writer as soon as possible in order to optimize the efficiency of his/her engineer resumes. The majority of the resumes are written with poor quality and many people start to make excuses when they don't get the call for interview. In this case, the engineer applicant has to avoid such common mistakes like having the wrong experience, having incorrect education and work history, taking shortcuts and embellishing the resume.

8 inner thoughts everyone has on their morning commute - Debut
8 inner thoughts everyone has on their morning commute - Debut Were all only human. We all have that little voice inside us that longs for disorder and chaos. And if you work in the big city, every morning that voice is satisfied. Yes, the morning commute brings out the very worst of our inner selves but such is the reality of any fight for survival. The range of emotions that someone can feel during this hour is startling. Here are just a few: Ugh. FINALLY. You managed to get out of bed while it was still dark outside. Youve fixed yourself after you put your shirt on inside out and then (somehow, bizarrely) back to front. You skipped breakfast just to make it to *insert suburban train station here* on time And the trains delayed. OH. There it is. I guess time flies when youre f%*ing furious. ?? I. CANT. BREATHE. In a lot of ways, life in London is very similar to death by drowning. Namely because of the vast sea of humanity youre wading into every morning. If a major train station is your only way to work, more life to you fam. If you have any other option (I hear cyclings alright) you might want to take it and avoid the overcrowding fiasco. Youll thank me when you dont have a strangers elbow or shoulder in your open mouth for 45 minutes. If you do find yourself in a situation like this, its important to zone out and go to your happy place. You might have a long way to go, and this is the only way to keep your sanity. Headphones are an essential tool for this. Draw for your favourite podcast or album and dream the whole experience away. I usually go for Death Cab For Cutie as Ben Gibbards sweet-sounding emo misery makes for a great distraction from my own predicament. Wow. You need to chill. While youre in your dream-like chill state, be sure to pay attention to your surroundings or you might make some enemies. Drift listlessly into someones way and all of a sudden youre a pig who needs to watch where the hell hes going. Jeez! Some people, eh? *chuckles weakly* Excuse me! Its all fun and games until the same thing happens to you. Your feelings of zen and nirvana become distant as you travel deeper into the bowels of the London Underground, where no-one can hear you scream. And to make matters worse, someones standing on the wrong side of the escalator. MOVE OMG *ahem* Sorry! ??, you splutter as you shuffle from side to side trying to let everyone around you know that you have the same tube to catch as they do. But they cant hear you. Theyve got The Sound of Settling or My Dad Wrote a Porno on full blast. Theyre blissfully unaware of the expletives youre screaming at them in your head. You are, at this point, fully picturing bodyslamming them off the escalator. Youve become everything you said you wouldnt. Oh God. Im sorry. Im so sorry. Its time to feel guilty again. Be honest. Youve committed a multitude of sins on you way to work today. Add all that to the time you laughed at the tall guy getting bonked on the head by a closing tube door. Or the time you were forced to stand way too close to another guys girlfriend on a packed train (she was nice about it). Its okay. You werent to know commuting to London was like this. Its important that you forgive yourself. Ah. The nightmare is over. You made it. ?? The hell of the morning commute is done for another day. Now all that left is huh? 8 hours of work?! Hey, if you love what you do, it aint so bad. ?? Images by Giphy Feature image via The Independent Connect with Debut on Facebook and Twitter

Avoid 3 Traps of the On-line Job Application
Avoid 3 Traps of the On-line Job Application You will be asked to complete an on-line job application as part of the hiring process. Why, because it makes life easier for recruiters. And because they wont need to pay someone to do data entry, youve done it for them. The application is a weeding out tool. Perhaps employers wont admit it, but, they are looking for certain things that would result in your elimination from the pack. Before I list those three traps, remember that the application must contain the right buzz words or keywords. There is no dictionary or thesaurus for these words. The words the employer searches for are generally the words used in the job posting. Simple. Just as you are entering in keywords or job titles into www.indeed.com, so are recruiters entering in keywords to find the best applicants. This is what you need to know about applicant tracking systems. This also means you will want to type in as much quality stuff as possible. Dont take short cuts. OK, so you are entering the easy stuff: name, address, telephone, email address and then you come to: ONE: What are your salary requirements? You try in vain to skip to the next question, but it wont let you. Darn, youll have to put a number in. Shoot, what number do you put? What you really want, how much you were paid in you last job, a low-ball number? Maybe. There isnt an easy answer for this. The answer depends on many things. Industry, occupation, competition in both, company and the alignment of the moon and stars. The answer will require that you step back and do some research. Talk to people in your occupation, ideally in that company, use salary calculators and talk to recruiters in that field. Ask for advice from people. With this information in hand, pick a mid-point. The mid point would be a salary you would accept for this job plus some. Sure, nice and easy. It isnt. The idea is to put a number in there that you would be ok with and that the employer finds within their range. All this is predicated on the skills and requirements of the job. It isnt about you. How many years of experience is the job posting requiring? Thats the biggest clue as to the level of salary the employer expects to pay. With this question answered, you move onto the Work History section. Read the instructions carefully. Employers and jobs are not the same. If the instructions state: List Employers that is what you need to do. So list the employers you have had within the last 10-15 years. Remember, the instructions didnt specify how far back to go. This is your choice. If the instructions state: List every position, then list each job you had with each employer. Be sure to break down employment by different jobs within a large company to show adaptability and ability to change. But then the application asks for TWO: Salary information for previous jobs Why, because they can. Truly, it is none of their business how much you were paid before. That is between you and the IRS. But being a good instruction follower youll provide a number for them if it doesnt hurt your chances. If the number is too high, you could be out. How can you downplay this number? You could put your starting salary in that position/job assuming that you received raises and made more at the end. Whatever you do, do NOT lie. That will not work. Phew, now it is on to the question THREE: Reason for leaving Sometimes youll have pull down options. Sometimes youll type it in. Keep it positive and short. Always use the most positive response, not the absolute truth. If you were fired, but it was due to a difference of opinion when new management took over, would you choose: a) Fired b) Personal c) Position eliminated d) Change in management The answer could be c) Position eliminated or d) Change in management. Applications will ask if you know someone in the company. Make sure this person knows you are applying before you include their name. Also make sure they are in good standing with the company. Name dropping can be a real plus. As always, if you can find someone inside the company to send your resume to or who is willing to be a champion for you, use them too! Filling out application after application will tend to result in a lack-luster response. Take the extra step and get the resume to the right person. Better yet, you should have identified this employer as a target and been in contact BEFORE the job was posted.

How to make the most of job search connections -
How to make the most of job search connections - During the dog days of summer, some of you job-seekers may think about taking a break from your search. Instead, you might want to ramp up your efforts and consider the new season an opportunity to relaunch any unfinished career plans. One inevitable aspect of the search? Interacting and engaging with connectionsâ"extending your network to tap into the hidden job market. Sudy Bharadwaj is the co-founder and chief executive officer of JackalopeJobs.com, which allows you to log in with your favorite social network and learn which of your connections work in companies that interest you. He has seen many job-seekers benefit from carefully accessing their extended network. Here are Bharadwajs nine suggestions for successfully networking your way to a job: 1. Connect with your network before you apply for positions. Even if you identify jobs via boards or postings, touch base with connections before applying directly. Many organizations prioritize applicants referred by employees. Some companies even give bonuses to employees who suggest candidates who are hired, so some networking contacts may have a financial incentive to pass along your information. Dont be shy about reaching out and asking for a hand. 2. Rotate your thinking. Bharadwaj suggests: Instead of finding jobs and focusing on connections in those companies, consider targeting your connections first and investigating who among them may be able to provide a link to a potential opportunity. To be successful, its important to know what you want and to be able to articulate how you can help an organization solve its problems. Once you know what you offer and how it relates to companies where you want to work, it will be much easier to leverage your network of contacts who can help you land jobs successfully. 3. Encourage your network by making it easy for them to help you. 4. Be concise and offer easy access to your information. 5. Go wide. 6. Dont go too deep. 7. Limit time requests. 8. Be patient. 9. Keep track and follow up. Read the whole post on my U.S. News World Report column. Photo by honor the gift
