Managers Have time for your people - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Directors Have time for your kin - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Do you possess energy for your representatives? Or then again do you have increasingly significant activities? John from Seattle composed a disappointed remark at my blog some time prior. One of his associates at an immense IT anticipate is essentially not cutting it: He is in every case late, he never complies with his time constraints and he doesn?t regard understandings. John has raised these issues with his associate a few times with no achievement, and now he feels that it?s time for his administrator to step in. What's more, John?s chief might especially want to talk about this with him whenever he has a touch of room left in his calendar ? which is in three weeks! That?s not sufficient on the grounds that meanwhile John develops increasingly more disappointed doing his own activity just as that of his awkward associate. John is this near simply stopping ? what's more, the organization is near losing an important worker since his chief hasn?t got time to converse with him. A couple of years back The Danish Association of Managers and Executives distributed an investigation indicating that 60% of Danish chiefs possess too little energy for their work since they invest a lot of time in their representatives. What a heap of babble! As a director, your workers are your activity. Your absolute primary goal is to keep them glad and profitable. Obviously all supervisors have different activities too, however in the event that you put your own assignments over those of your quick subordinates, the outcome will be an expansion in one person?s proficiency (yours) to the detriment of that of 10-20 others (contingent upon what number of you are answerable for). On the off chance that you?re not 10-20 times more profitable than them, that?s a downright awful thought. So you have to possess energy for your kin each and every day. Time for two things: making and looking after great, neighborly relations and taking care of any emergencies that may emerge. A portion of the world?s top officials have just gotten on: Marissa Mayer, in her time at Google opened her office entryway each evening somewhere in the range of 4 and 5.30. There was an information exchange sheet on the divider and love seats and WiFi in the lobby outside so individuals could work while they paused. During this 90 minutes, all Google workers could introduce their inquiries, questions, wishes or thoughts. A couple of years back, IKEA held an European official gathering in their store in Gentofte, Denmark, and author Ingvar Kamprad was available as well. At the point when the gathering closes, Ingvar goes for a walk through the store, merciful and smilingly welcoming every single representative. He experiences two female workers conversing with one another and approaches them with a grin and the words: ?And what are too such dazzling women discussing at that point?? ? catching up with goliath embrace for them both. Not terrible for a man who?s a multi-extremely rich person accountable for well more than 100,000 individuals overall ? what's more, 86 years of age. Numerous chiefs accept that it?s enough to simply announce that ?My entryway is open?. Indeed, it?s a decent beginning, however your calendar is likewise open ? or then again do you have one end to the other gatherings for a long time to come? So what precisely would you be able to do set aside a few minutes for your workers? I?ve got two straightforward and viable tips for you: Tip No. 1: Say hello! A caring welcome from the supervisor has a totally astounding impact. In any case, it?s insufficient to simply get your head through the entryway and holler great morning to the room by and large. Walk the passageways and give every single worker an individual welcome. Shake hands, look at individuals without flinching, and associate with individuals ? ?Did you have a pleasant end of the week??; ?Did you watch the game yesterday??; ?Is your child improving??. Tip No. 2: Reserve five minutes for a representative consistently ? with no specific plan. Simply converse with another one consistently, just to discover how things are going. You can make a rundown to assist you with keeping on whom you have conversed with and when and guarantee that you get around to everyone in the long run. This will reinforce your relationship with every one of your representatives, however you will likewise hear a ton that you probably won't have been told something else. Do these means sound insignificant? Indeed, you?re right, they are ? in any case, that?s why they work! They?re so straightforward, they don't cost anything, they take (basically) no time by any stretch of the imagination, and each supervisor can do them. Also, on the off chance that you don?t figure you can discover time for them, my answer is basic as well: You can?t manage the cost of not to! What number of good workers do you chance losing in the event that you haven?t got time for them? Furthermore, what amount will it cost you to supplant them? Much obliged for visiting my blog. In case you're new here, you should look at this rundown of my 10 most well known articles. Also, in the event that you need increasingly extraordinary tips and thoughts you should look at our bulletin about bliss at work. Uber Interview Questions - Maximum Sum of Non-adjacent Elements

Uber Interview Questions - Maximum Sum of Non-adjacent Elements As you may know, one of our blogs current focuses is on Uber interview questions. Their questions are usually representative and you can expect exactly the same kind of questions from other top companies like Google, Facebook, Airbnb, etc.. In addition, we only cover questions that were asked recently. This week, the question is maximum sum of non-adjacent elements. Its of medium difficulty, you may expect to have it as the second question in an on-site interview. We are going to cover topics including array, recursion/dynamic programming, algorithm efficiency and so on so forth. Maximum Sum of Non-adjacent Elements Given an array of integers, find a maximum sum of non-adjacent elements. For example, inputs [1, 0, 3, 9, 2] should return 10 (1 + 9). The question has been asked by Uber recently (as the time of writing). Ive also seen many similar questions like finding the maximum sum of subarrays. Analysis Again, if you havent seen this questions before, solve it by yourself first. Otherwise, theres no point to reading this post. Its not obvious to solve this problem naively. Unlike many other interview questions, you can hardly use brute force or some greedy algorithms here, because theres no way for you to list all non-adjacent elements combination. But just because of this, it provides a great hint dynamic programming. Let me explain more here. Dynamic programming You may check Step by Step Guide to Dynamic Programming if you are unfamiliar with this concept and its completely necessary to know it for coding interviews. When I was trying to solve this problem, there are two obvious things that make me think about dynamic programming. First, when the question is about finding particular subarrays or subsets, dynamic programming is usually a great approach. This is because the problem is easy to break down into sub-problems. Second, when you find it impossible to brute force all possibilities, it also indicates that recursion or dynamic programming is worth to try. For example, finding subarray with given sum can easily be solved by brute force (of course its not optimal), but you can do the same thing to find the subset with given sum. (Check this post for more info) Solution With that in mind, we should think about how to break down the big problem into sub-problems. Suppose we know the max sum for all subarrays, how can it help us to solve the overall problem? Lets use max_sum[i] denote the maximum sum for subarray arr[0i]. If the last number arr[i] is included in the sum, max_sum[i] should equal to arr[i] + max_sum[i-2] (because arr[i-1] cannot be included). Similarly, if arr[i] isnt included, then max_sum[i] should equal to arr[i-1]. Therefore, we have the following formula: max_sum[i] = MAX(arr[i] + max_sum[i-2], max_sum[i-1]) So the code is like: Memorization One of the advantages of dynamic programming is memorization. In the above code, many steps are unnecessarily re-calculated. To make it faster, we should store all results in memory. Thus, we have the following code: As you can see, we use array mem to store all results weve processed so that we wont repeat the unnecessary calculation. The time complexity is O(N) because from i = 0 to N, every single one is calculated at most once due to memorization. As we use an extra array, the space complexity is O(N) as well. Optimization Can you further optimize the solution? First of all, theres no way to improve the time complexity because we should check every single number at least once. Thus O(N) is the lower bound. Thus, we should think about reducing memory usage. If you take a look at the previous formula again, you might notice one interesting fact. Every step only relies on the previous two steps results. In other words, if we care about max_sum(i), theres no need to store anything before i-2. The code might be quite different from previous versions, that is because we are doing a bottom-up approach for dynamic programming. We use prevOne and prevTwo to store results of previous two steps. From i = 0 to N, we store the results of each subarray arr[0i] to prevOne and arr[0i-1] to prevTwo, thus the next iteration can use them to calculate for the new subarray. In essence, they are exactly the same as previous solutions. Summary I hope you found the question maximum sum of non-adjacent elements helpful. Instead of giving you the final solution, I think its very necessary to provide the whole analysis process and provide the coding solution at each step. Otherwise, many people wont be able to know where the final solution come from. Dynamic programming is a hard topic in coding interviews. Most of the time a top-down approach is enough, but for this one, a bottom-up approach is more efficient. By the way, if you want to have more guidance from experienced interviewers, you can check Gainlo that allows you to have mock interview with engineers from Google, Facebook ,etc..

[DARE #14] - Unstuck Yet - What Went Wrong in 2014 - Melissa Llarena

[DARE #14] - Unstuck Yet - What Went Wrong in 2014 [DARE #14] Unstuck Yet? What Went Wrong in 2014? Its the last Sunday challenge of the year.  Last week I encouraged you to figure out ways to delegate yourself out of your current job to a better one it was a forward-looking task. Now, lets take one step back.Be warned: this one is uncomfortable for everyone but its about increasing our self-awareness.If we increase our self-awareness around the promises that we make to ourselvesIf we increase our self-awareness around the expectations we place on ourselvesIf we increase our self-awareness around why we have unfulfilled promises and unsatisfying expectationsthen we can get to the root of what it will really take to achieve our desires in the new year. So, dare #14 is for you to revisit your 2014 New Years resolutions.  Crack open that old notebook.Read your list.So did you eat healthier? Are your finances in a better place?Did you get that makeover? How did that career transition go or not go?Are you in a new home?Did your business grow?Did you launch your website? Are you happier today than when 2014 began?Think through your 2014 New Years resolutionsCross out the ones you got done and celebrate thoseHighlight the ones that you didnt get done in 2014The assignment is not to dwell on missed opportunities but to figure out why you left so much on the table. Its inevitable.Chances are (unless you had few or zero 2014 resolutions) that a few big ones did not happenChances are that year after year the same one is haunting youWhen looking at those unresolved dreams ask yourselfDid I ever really want that or was I trying to fulfill someone elses expectations? Was I really ready to sacrifice my sleep or family or [x] time for that goal?Did I continue to surround myself with unsupportive folks? How well equipped was I by myself to reach that goal? Was I setting myself up for disappointments by aiming for unrealistic goals? Was I seriously sober when I wrote that? (Just kidding, maybe?)Heres an example of one of my own 2014 unfulfilled goals:My goal was to have in place a do-it-yourself product so that when I birthed my twins I could continue to sustain my business while going from being a mom of one little boy to three boys.So how did I net out?I created this sales page.I sent a note to my database 1.5 months prior to going on maternity leave.I sold some packages. And then proceeded the sound of  crickets.I went on maternity leave for about four months. And instead of selling this DIY packetformer and new clients wanted more of me and my time rather than less of me and my timeIn other words, you guys didnt really want to do-it-yourselvesYou prefer a partnerAn accompliceA sound boardingA strategic career expert to give you confidence in knowing that you are doing everything right or who will help you think through what youre doing wrong based on years of experienceSo after reviewing this 2014 goalGetting to know hundreds of youAnd evaluating my anticipated 2015 best lifeMy plan is to offer higher-touch, even more tailored, deeper diving career coaching options to fewer clients in 2015Why?You want more of me and I want more of you.Let me explain. You want me to be accessible the night before your interviewYou want me to iron out your interview answersYou want me to uncover usable insights around your interviewersIn turn,I want to teach you the most effective ways to outsmart your competition based on your specific situationI want to show you how to work a room filled with prospective colleagues, leaders or direct reports while taking into account what it will take to get YOU comfortable in a stressful settingI want to meet you one-on-oneNow, there is no sales page (yet). My rationale behind my example is not to sell you on my brainchild instead I want to show you how you can think about your 2014 unrealized resolutions to inform your 2015 goals so that they will have a higher likelihood of success. Now, its time to reevaluate your 2014 resolutionsBe honest with yourselfUncover why so me never happenedAnd use those insights so that 2015 is more productive and fulfilling.Happy Sunday,Melissa
